Vancouver, BC – (June 9, 2020) – RTDNA Canada is pleased to honour Ed Watson with an RTDNA Canada Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding service and continued excellence in his journalism career.

“Congratulations Ed! A well-deserved recognition of your career that spans over 30 years. I’m so proud that your colleagues have chosen to honour you with the Lifetime Achievement Award,” said RTDNA Canada President Fiona Conway.

A graduate from BCIT’s Broadcast Journalism Program, Ed began his career in Red Deer, Alberta as a radio and TV anchor. He quickly moved to ITV in Edmonton, and then to CFCN in Calgary before joining CBC Television in Vancouver. In 1984, Ed began hosting CBC’s “Night Final” which turned into a quirky and very popular late-night news program. Over the next 25 years Ed developed his creative storytelling style while working for the CBC, CHEK and VTV/CTV Vancouver as a reporter, anchor, video journalist, legislative bureau chief, and assignment editor. He even ran his own video production business. Throughout his career in BC, his work has been recognized for excellence, including with an Edward R. Murrow Award, a Gold Ribbon Award from the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, and awards from the RTDNA and the Jack Webster Foundation.

Among his peers, he is known as a generous mentor, a leader, and for playing rock and roll loud enough to irritate the people working around him.

Ed has been active in his community coaching youth sports, chairing the Juan de Fuca Parks and Recreation Commission, and chairing an advisory committee to his local council. He is currently leading a committee formed to bring a persecuted Pakistani journalist and his family to Canada.

He now operates a small photography business and freelances for the Canadian Public Affairs Channel (CPAC).
