Scholarship Information

RTDNF Canada was established by RTDNA Canada in 1978 to offer financial assistance to students in Canada.

This year, eight scholarships will be awarded to Canadian students, bringing the total amount awarded to students by RTDNF Canada to more than $400,000.

Scholarship Qualifications: 

  • You must be currently enrolled in a Canadian broadcast or digital journalism course at either a college or university.

  • You must be a Canadian citizen, landed Immigrant, or hold a Canadian work visa.

  • Entries must be produced and written by the entrant(s). No more than a team of two can submit one entry. If successful, the scholarship would be divided equally between team members.

  • The total scholarship presentation time must not exceed 30 minutes. Entries can be edited for time.

  • A cover letter must be submitted including a short description of your submission including any highlights or challenges you would like to feature such as topic selection, research, interviews or reaction to the finished story.

  • Submissions are limited to ONE (1) per applicant per scholarship. The same story/media cannot be submitted to more than one scholarship and all submissions must have been produced for a school assignment in the 2023-24 school term.

  • All entries must be submitted online. Deadline is Monday, April 1, 2024 @ 11:59 PM (EST)

The Sachedina • CTV News • Fellowship

 

Chief Anchor and Senior Editor Omar Sachedina and CTV News Launch the Sachedina CTV News Fellowship. In partnership with RTDNF Canada and Massey College, the new fellowship program supports emerging journalists exploring a subject of significance to Canadians. Fellows will receive a $10,000 stipend along with mentoring and training from the leading team of editors and reporters at CTV NATIONAL NEWS.

Description

  • Sachedina/CTV News Fellows will receive $10,000 to complete an original piece of journalism.
  • Each Fellow will be required to demonstrate a commitment to the topic through previous work and ongoing sourcing, and produce a substantial and original piece of reporting within six (6) months of receiving the Fellowship.  This project should reflect a subject or theme that makes a difference to Canada and the people who reside here.
  • Half of the award ($5000) will be awarded upon selection, with the remainder upon completion of the project. 
  • Fellows will have access to Faculty affiliated with the University of Toronto’s Massey College for research purposes. 
  • Their work may be published on (a) CTV News platform(s), with the input of journalists on staff.
  • Two Fellows will be selected in the inaugural year (2024), and one Fellow yearly thereafter.

Eligibility

  • Be within one year of graduation from a Canadian broadcast or journalism course at college or university OR recently graduated (within the past two years).
  • Use the Fellowship to produce a substantial and original piece of journalism that will inform, educate, or inspire – and contribute to a greater understanding of Canada.
  • Have a proven commitment to the topic and a specific angle you want to pursue.  This can include having contacts with sources and previous published pieces of journalism on similar themes.  Journalism produced at college or university can be submitted.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or hold a Canadian work visa.
  • This scholarship will be awarded to an individual or team of two for a broadcast or digital entry that shows exceptional storytelling, creativity, and quality. In the case of a team, the scholarship will be divided equally.

RTDNF Canada Scholarship - $2,000

Eligibility: Graduate, 2nd, and 3rd year students.

This scholarship will be awarded to an individual or team of two for a broadcast or digital entry that shows exceptional storytelling, creativity and quality. In the case of a team, the scholarship will be divided equally.

JJ Richards Scholarship - $2,000

Eligibility: 3rd or final year students.

Candidates with a passion for podcasts and longer form radio storytelling must submit a radio documentary or podcast with a maximum length of 30 minutes. May be edited to fit time requirements. 

CBC/Barbara Frum Scholarship - $2,000

Eligibility: Students at all levels.

Entrants must submit a complete radio, podcast or TV interview (not an excerpt). Prepared questions and short background material must accompany the online submission.

BNN Bloomberg/Jim O'Connell Scholarship - $2,000

Eligibility: Students at all levels with an interest in business journalism.

The candidate must submit a broadcast or digital business news story or feature that demonstrates an ability to grasp business issues and presents information in a clear, well-written and compelling way.

Broadcasters of Atlantic Canada Scholarship - $2,000

Eligibility: Students at all levels from Atlantic Canada.

The candidate must submit a news story in digital or broadcast format. Documentation supporting residency is required.

RTDNA Canada George Clark Scholarship - $2,500

This additional scholarship will be awarded to one of the winners of the above categories deemed to be the best overall. In the case of an entry produced by a team of two, the scholarship award will be divided equally.

Global News Diversity Scholarship - $2,000

Eligibility: Students from racialized communities attending a college or university journalism or communication program. Candidates must submit a news or feature story in digital or broadcast format. In addition, a letter of support from your supervisor must be included in the application.

CBC David Suzuki Scholarship - $5,000

Eligibility: Students from racialized communities with a demonstrated interest in science journalism who are in their final year of a college or university journalism program.

The candidate must submit a video, audio, print or interactive digital news story or feature that demonstrates an ability to grasp scientific issues and presents information in a clear and compelling way. In exceptional circumstances, the scholarship recipient may also be offered short-term employment at the CBC or on an affiliated independent production. 

Technical Guidelines
  • All media file uploads must be no greater than 4GB in size.
  • Video uploads are accepted in the following formats: .avi, .flv, .m4v, .mov, .mp4, .mpeg, .mpg
  • Audio uploads are accepted in MP3 format only
  • Document uploads are accepted in PDF and Microsoft Word format only
  • External URLs are accepted, but must remain accessible after the submission deadline for judging purposes
