Nominations for the RTDNA Canada 2024 Emerging Journalist Award have now closed!

Last year RTDNA Canada launched its first award honouring a young journalist who has exhibited a commitment to the craft of telling stories.
 
If you work with a recent hire who is already leaving his/her/their mark, – here is the chance to give them some well-deserved recognition.

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Have worked in the media industry for fewer than five years
  • Must work as a journalist for a professional news organization or publication, whether in a full-time, part-time, contract, or freelance capacity
  • Must have made a significant journalistic impact on the audience or community they serve
  • Nominations must come from experienced media professionals who have employed or worked directly with the nominee.

Description and Criteria Summary

Description: Awarded to an emerging journalist who displays excellence in the coverage of original (enterprise) journalism on a single topic, investigative reporting, or continuing coverage of a beat or a major breaking and developing story.

Platforms: Audio, Digital, Multiplatform, Video.

Media – Duration/Format of required media: Maximum ten (10) minutes of audio and/or video. Maximum five (5) URLs pointing to audio, video, articles and/or inter-actives as they were originally presented.

Criteria:

  • Editorial excellence and quality of writing
  • Unique exploration of the topic or issue including in-depth research and analysis
  • Innovation and creativity using multimedia, social tools or digital platforms
  • Story elements *reflect diversity
  • Journalistic impact on audience or community by raising awareness of important issues or bringing about change
  • Professionalism including commitment to accuracy, fairness, and ethical reporting practices

Think broadly, in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age and physical disabilities, geography and groups that have faced systemic barriers
