For years, there has been a distinct divide in journalism – the content creators and the business of journalism.  Most journalists don’t get into journalism to think about revenue numbers. They get into the industry to tell stories. But is that business-minded orientation a crucial skill set we are missing? Could we bee better off within large media enterprises and as individual creators if we thought about what we do through a business lens?  Does journalism need more leaders who know how to run a business?

Emma Gilchrist is co-founder, editor-in-chief and executive director of The Narwhal, a non-profit online magazine that publishes in-depth and investigative journalism about the natural world in Canada. The Narwhal runs no advertisements and has no paywall and is supported by donations. Since launching in 2018, the organization has grown from two staff to 26.

 

Jordan Timm

Managing Editor, The Logic

Jordan Timm is managing editor of The Logic, a five-year-old Canadian news outlet covering business and technology. He has held senior newsroom roles at the National Post, Ottawa Citizen and Canadian Business, and is a member of the board of the Canadian chapter of the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing (SABEW).

 

Meg Wilcox

Associate Professor in Journalism & Digital Media at Mount Royal University; author of The New Journalist’s Guide to Freelancing: Building Your Career in the New Media Landscape

Before joining MRU in 2018, Meg spent nearly a decade travelling the country and working as a reporter, producer and host (CBC, CTV, iPolitics, Banff Centre Radio, CKUA). She teaches podcasting, documentary and media entrepreneurship, and is co-director of the school’s Community Podcast Initiative. Her book, The New Journalist’s Guide to Freelancing, is a practical guide for recent graduates and early-career media makers looking to navigate the ups and downs of working in media.
