Dear RTDNA Canada Member,

As you are well aware, our industry continues to go through monumental change and I believe it is incumbent upon us as an association to reflect these changes by being able to comment on them and as importantly, function efficiently within the changing landscape.

The proposed changes to the by-laws reflect on two main themes; modernizing the language to remove gender-specific terminology and change the position of Secretary-Treasurer to Business Manager and secondly; to more accurately reflect the volatility of employment and not let that negatively impact on the operations of the board.

The proposal allows for a more realistic timeframe for members seeking election to board or executive positions to regain employment in the industry. The language allows for up to twelve months of unemployment. One would reason that in today’s turbulent times it may take more than three or six months to land an active job in broadcast or digital journalism, and the changes to articles 1.1 and 2.9 are aimed at reflecting that unfortunate reality. The changes are especially poignant with the realization that in the past few months half of our executive and half of our ethics committee have become unemployed.

I am confident that these proposed changes will help the RTDNA function most effectively and prevent it from being hampered operationally or in terms of continuity due to ongoing precariousness in the market.

The proposed by-law changes will be voted on at the AGM on June 3, 2016 at the Shangri-La Hotel in Toronto, ON.
